Kia has issued a recall for 1,385 Sorento PHEV models in the United States due to a potential fire hazard. In certain frontal collisions, the vehicle’s front subframe can be pushed rearward, potentially contacting and damaging a fuel line. This could lead to a fuel leak and increase the risk of a fire.
The recall affects Sorento PHEV vehicles produced between April 2, 2024, and October 17, 2024, equipped with a rack-mounted motor-driven power steering system. Kia has not reported any accidents, injuries, or fires related to this issue, which was discovered during crash testing for the upcoming 2026 model year Sorento.
To mitigate the risk, Kia dealers will install an additional protective cover around the fuel line to prevent contact with the steering rack in the event of a collision.
The recalled Sorento PHEV models are available in EX AWD and XS Prestige AWD trims, priced from $47,990 to $53,090. Powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, the PHEV delivers 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle boasts an all-electric driving range of up to 31 miles.
Kia will notify affected owners in early January 2025 and urge them to schedule repairs at their nearest Kia dealership as soon as possible.
