Kia EV9 Recall: Manufacturing Error Affects Seat Security

Kia has initiated a recall affecting 22,883 units of its 2024 and 2025 EV9 electric SUVs due to a critical safety concern: improperly secured second- and third-row seats. Although the percentage of affected vehicles is relatively low, the potential for serious injuries underscores the severity of this issue.

The recall stems from an error made during the vehicle assembly process at the manufacturing plant. While the exact number of vehicles with missing bolts remains low, the possibility of loose or missing seat mountings poses a significant safety risk to passengers.

Kia first became aware of this issue in September when missing bolts were discovered in the third-row seat of a 2024 EV9. Subsequent investigations revealed another vehicle with missing bolts in both the second and third rows. While an initial inspection of 990 vehicles at a port did not uncover any issues, a third affected vehicle was identified in early December, prompting the official recall.

To address this concern, Kia will notify owners in the coming month. Dealerships will then inspect the affected vehicles, checking for loose or missing seat mounting bolts in all rows. If any issues are found, necessary repairs, including tightening or replacing bolts, will be performed at no cost to the owner.

Although the recall primarily focuses on the second and third-row seats, dealerships will also inspect the front-row seats as a precautionary measure. The inspection process involves removing bolt covers, verifying the presence of all bolts, and ensuring they are tightened to the appropriate torque specifications.

While Kia has not reported any accidents or injuries related to this issue, the proactive recall demonstrates the company’s commitment to vehicle safety and customer well-being.
