BYD Atto 3: Over 1,000 Preorders in First Week of South Korean Sales

BYD has made a strong entry into the South Korean electric vehicle market, achieving over 1,000 preorders for its Atto 3 compact SUV within its first week of availability. This impressive debut poses a serious challenge to domestic giants Hyundai and Kia, who have long dominated the Korean EV market.

Launched on January 16th, the Atto 3 is offered in two trims: Standard and Plus, priced competitively at 31.5 million won (approximately $21,600) and 33 million won (around $23,000) respectively. Powered by a 60.48 kWh BYD Blade battery, the Atto 3 boasts an estimated driving range of 321 kilometers (200 miles) in Korean conditions.

According to reports, the Plus trim, featuring enhancements like a premium sound system, ventilated seats, and an electric tailgate, has garnered significant consumer interest, accounting for approximately 90% of the preorders.

BYD plans to further expand its presence in the South Korean market with the introduction of the Tesla Model 3-rivaling Seal and the Sealion 7 electric SUV later this year. The company has strategically established a network of 15 showrooms and 11 service centers across key locations, including Seoul and Jeju Island.

The Atto 3’s competitive pricing and compelling features position it directly against popular Korean models like the Hyundai Casper Electric and the Kia EV3. While the Casper Electric is similarly priced, the Kia EV3 commands a significantly higher price tag at 42.08 million won (around $30,000). However, the Atto 3 may face some disadvantages due to its LFP battery, which may qualify it for less government subsidies compared to Hyundai and Kia models.

BYD’s impressive performance in Japan, where it outsold Toyota in EV sales last year, signals its growing global influence. The company’s entry into the fiercely competitive South Korean market will undoubtedly intensify the competition among EV manufacturers, prompting Hyundai and Kia to accelerate their own electric vehicle advancements.
