New Cupra Terramar: Coming soon to European markets

Cupra Terramar

Cupra, the performance-oriented brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, is expanding its model lineup with the all-new Terramar. Positioned to compete in the highly competitive compact SUV segment, the Terramar offers a blend of aggressive styling, sporty driving dynamics, and a range of electrified powertrains.

Design and Styling

The Terramar adopts Cupra’s latest design language, showcasing sharp lines, sculpted bodywork, and distinctive features. While it shares its basic structure with the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Terramar’s design elements are unique to Cupra.

The SUV’s exterior is characterized by aggressive headlights, a sharp nose with large bumper intakes, and full-width LED taillights connected by an illuminated badge. The rear bumper features a fake diffuser, and the Terramar sits on 18-, 19-, or 20-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim.

The name “Terramar” pays homage to the Autòdrom de Sitges-Terramar, a former racing circuit in Catalonia.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Terramar offers a modern and sporty interior with a similar layout to the VW Tiguan. Cupra-specific features, such as the illuminated touch slider on the infotainment system, add a premium touch. The standard bucket seats are upholstered in upcycled textile or a combination of recycled textile and leather.

Tech features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, and an available 12-speaker audio system by Sennheiser.

Performance and Powertrains

The Cupra Terramar rides on the MQB Evo architecture, shared with models like the VW Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq. However, Cupra has tuned the setup for sportier driving dynamics.

The standard sport suspension is 10 mm lower than mechanically-related models and features a higher camber at the front. The SUV also benefits from the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system, standard progressive steering, an electrical Brake Booster, and available Akebono brakes.

The Terramar offers a range of powertrain options, including:

  • A mild-hybrid 1.5 eTSI engine producing 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS)
  • A non-electrified 2.0-liter TSI engine producing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) or 261 hp (195 kW / 265 PS)
  • Two plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) powertrains producing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) respectively

The plug-in hybrid variants offer an electric range of over 100 km (62 mph) and support DC charging of up to 50 kW.

Production and Availability

The Cupra Terramar was designed and developed in Barcelona, Spain, and will be manufactured at Audi’s Gyor plant in Hungary. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2025, with pricing to be announced closer to the market launch.

Cupra also revealed a limited-production launch edition, the Terramar America’s Cup special, featuring unique styling cues and a production run of 1,337 units.

With its combination of sporty design, advanced technology, and electrified powertrains, the Cupra Terramar is poised to make a strong impact in the European compact SUV market.
