Jaguar is poised to unveil a groundbreaking electric luxury sedan concept on December 2nd, marking a significant departure from its past as a BMW rival. This bold move was made possible by the decision to scrap the almost production-ready electric XJ, a decision that, as evidenced by a leaked image, was undeniably the right one.
Spy photos captured the XJ EV prototypes undergoing testing before the project’s cancellation in early 2021. However, a leaked image offers a clear, uncamouflaged look at what could have been. The design, a blend of elements from various Jaguar models and even rival cars like the Tesla Model S, lacks the innovation and excitement expected from a flagship Jaguar.
The leaked XJ’s design, while functional, appears derivative and uninspiring. Its reliance on familiar design cues from other models, such as the F-Type and i-Pace, fails to deliver the bold and distinctive look that a Jaguar should possess.

In contrast, the upcoming electric GT concept, teased by Jaguar, promises a more daring and futuristic design. The sleek, low-slung profile and swept-back windshield hint at a vehicle that will push the boundaries of automotive design.
By scrapping the traditional XJ project, Jaguar has embraced a new direction, aiming to position itself as a luxury brand rivaling Porsche and Bentley. This strategic shift involves developing a range of high-end electric vehicles, starting with the upcoming sedan and followed by two more EVs before the end of the decade.
The decision to abandon the electric XJ, while undoubtedly challenging, has paved the way for a more exciting and innovative future for Jaguar. The upcoming electric GT concept and subsequent models are poised to redefine the brand and capture the imagination of luxury car enthusiasts worldwide.
