Vanwall has finally unveiled its all-electric Vandervell hatchback, two years after initial renderings teased its arrival. This high-performance EV boasts up to 641 horsepower (478 kW) and lives up to its promise of thrilling performance.
The Vandervell is built on the Hyundai group’s E-GMP platform, the same architecture used by several Hyundai and Kia EVs, notably the Ioniq 5 and its performance-oriented sibling, the Ioniq 5 N. While Vanwall hasn’t explicitly confirmed the Ioniq 5 connection, the visual similarities, from the door mirrors to the overall shape, strongly suggest a shared foundation. This platform is coupled with a sport-tuned chassis and a “significantly lower weight,” though exact figures haven’t been released.

Three all-wheel-drive variants will be available. The base H-GT offers 320 hp (239 kW), while the top-tier N-GT delivers a remarkable 641 hp (478 kW), matching the output of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT. A special lightweight version, the Thin Wall Special, aims for a sub-2,000 kg (4,409 lbs) weight.

The Vandervell’s carbon fiber bodywork closely resembles the initial renderings, evoking Lancia Delta Integrale vibes with its flared fenders and quad headlights integrated into the grille. Large bumper intakes, a prominent rear diffuser, and a subtle rear spoiler contribute to its aggressive look. Massive 22-inch, seven-spoke gold alloy wheels complete the exterior design.

Interior details are scarce, but Vanwall promises high-quality materials like leather and velour. Given the shared platform, the interior design and switchgear may have similarities to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. However, the limited production run allows for bespoke customization.

Pricing and availability are yet to be formally announced. Previous estimates suggested a starting price of €128,000 ($132,900) and a production run of 500 units. Production was initially planned for 2024, but timelines for such projects can be subject to change.

Vanwall is a revived brand honoring the British racing team that won the 1958 F1 constructors’ title. Founded by Dr. Colin Kolles, a former F1 team manager and principal, the company aims to create a car that can be both a luxurious limousine and a rally/racing car.

Beyond the EV, Vanwall also competes in the FIA WEC with an LM Hypercar, which will serve as the basis for a 1,000 hp road and track production model weighing approximately 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs). Kolles has also hinted at a future “Vanwall hyperbike,” though details remain undisclosed.
