Kia Recalls 80,000 Niro EVs, Hybrids, and PHEVs

Kia is recalling over 80,000 Niro vehicles in the US, including EV, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and hybrid models from the 2023 and 2024 model years, due to a potential issue with the front passenger seat wiring. The recall affects 21,909 Niro EVs, 49,535 hybrids, and 8,811 PHEVs built between June 21, 2022, and December 17, 2024. Vehicles with power-adjustable passenger seats are not affected.

The problem stems from the floor wiring harness beneath the front passenger seat. Repeated movement of the manual seat can damage these wires, potentially preventing the front airbags and seatbelts from functioning correctly in a crash. In some cases, the side airbag could even deploy unexpectedly. Kia’s investigation revealed the cause, and the recall aims to prevent these malfunctions. No accidents, injuries, or fatalities have been reported in connection with this issue.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail around March 14, 2025, and should schedule a service appointment with their local Kia dealer. Dealers will inspect the wiring and replace it if necessary, and will also install protective covers to prevent future damage—all free of charge.
