Surprise Move! Jeep Slashes Compass Price by Rs 1.7 Lakh

Jeep Compass

In a rather surprising move, Jeep India has introduced a price cut on its cheapest offering, the Compass. Jeep India is not known for cutting prices or making compelling value propositions and the company’s new move is certainly a step in the right direction. However, the price cut is selective and not applicable to all variants.

Jeep Compass price has been cut, now starting at Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-factory)

At just 4 cm longer than the longest compact SUV, the Jeep Compass previously cost more than double the cheapest compact SUV. Considering the base model of MG Astor priced at Rs 9.99 lakh, the premium quotient of a Jeep Compass starts to fade with a premium of Rs 10.7 lakh. The Compass’ argument comes down to a larger 2.0-litre diesel engine in the base model. But with a starting price of Rs 20.69 lakh (ex-factory), it’s a bitter pill to swallow. Now, Jeep India is making things a little easier and making it simpler for buyers. The company is offering a price adjustment of Rs 1.7 lakh (excl. VAT) for the Compass. With this, the Jeep Compass is available at an adjusted starting price of Rs 18.99 lakh (excl. VAT). Given the price cuts on the base model, one would normally expect a similar trend across the rest of the Compass variant range. However, this is not the case at all.

Jeep recently increased the prices of the Compass SUV by around Rs 14,000 (excl. VAT) almost uniformly across the range. Now, the price difference between the base model Sport 2.0 Diesel MT and the older Longitude 2.0 Diesel MT, which costs Rs 22.33 lakh (excl. VAT), is a whopping Rs 3.34 lakh (excl. VAT). This steep increase was much lesser earlier when the base model was priced at Rs 20.69 lakh (excl. VAT). Notable features on the base Sport trim include an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display, 17-inch monotone alloy wheels, and LED reflector headlights. Trim levels continue to start at Sport, followed by Longitude, Night Eagle, Limited, Black Shark, and Model S.

Compass facelift, petrol on the way?

Now, the Jeep Compass offers a single 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine with 170 PS of maximum power and 350 Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 9-speed torque converter. Jeep also offers the option of a FWD or AWD powertrain setup. However, there is no manual AWD setup.

Jeep is set to launch the Meridian facelift, which has been spotted in multiple tests with an additional Bosch ADAS suite. Compass should logically receive the same upgrades. There is speculation that there will also be a gasoline engine in the future to create an attractive (and much-needed) price point for the Compass and Meridian and thus boost sales.
