Wuling, a joint venture between SAIC-GM-Wuling, has launched the new Xing Guang S (Starlight S) in China. This stylish crossover offers a blend of Buick-inspired design, electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and a spacious interior.
Design and Dimensions
The Xing Guang S features a flowing bodywork with plastic body cladding, giving it a rugged yet modern appearance. Split lighting units, rain-sensing wipers, and 18-inch alloy wheels enhance its exterior appeal.
In terms of size, the Starlight S measures 186.8 inches (4,745 mm) long, 74.4 inches (1,890 mm) wide, and 66.1 inches (1,680 mm) tall with a wheelbase of 110.2 inches (2,800 mm). This makes it larger than the Chevrolet Equinox but smaller than the Buick Electra E5.
Interior and Features
The minimalist cabin of the Xing Guang S boasts a modern design with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment system. Leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather front seats that can fold flat for added comfort are also included. Other features include 23 storage compartments and a spacious cargo area that can hold up to 62.4 cubic feet (1,768 liters) of luggage with the rear seats folded down.
Higher-end variants of the Starlight S offer additional luxury features such as heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic moonroof, a power liftgate, a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system, and a power supply for camping.
Powertrain Options
The Xing Guang S is available with both plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. The plug-in hybrid variant features a 1.5-liter engine, an electronic continuously variable transmission, and an electric motor producing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. It is paired with either a 9.5 kWh or 20.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, offering a CLTC range of 37 miles (60 km) or 81 miles (130 km), respectively. The combined range of the plug-in hybrid can reach up to 684 miles (1,100 km).
The electric variant uses the same electric motor but is equipped with a larger 60 kWh battery pack. This allows for a faster acceleration of 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.7 seconds and a claimed range of up to 317 miles (510 km) on a single charge.
Pricing and Availability
The Wuling Xing Guang S is competitively priced, starting at ¥99,800 ($14,014) for the plug-in hybrid version and ¥119,800 ($16,822) for the electric version. This affordability has contributed to the model’s popularity, with over 10,000 pre-orders received since August.
The Xing Guang S is a promising addition to Wuling’s lineup, offering a stylish design, practical features, and a choice of efficient powertrains. Its competitive pricing and strong performance make it a compelling option for Chinese consumers seeking a versatile and affordable electric crossover.
