Bajaj Auto is gearing up to introduce a more affordable variant of its electric scooter, the Chetak. While retaining the iconic design, this new variant will feature several cost-cutting measures to make it more accessible to a wider range of buyers.
One of the most noticeable changes is the switch from alloy wheels to steel wheels, along with the replacement of disc brakes with drum brakes. Additionally, the new variant will feature a physical key slot instead of a keyless entry system.
The digital instrument cluster has also been simplified, with a monochrome display replacing the colored LCD screen found on higher-end models. The lockable glove box has been replaced with dual open cubbies, further reducing costs.
While specific details about the powertrain and battery capacity are yet to be officially announced, it is likely that this variant will offer a slightly lower range and performance compared to the current models. The 2.9kWh battery pack from the Chetak Urbane, which offers a claimed IDC range of 113km, could be retained.
The current Chetak is available in two variants: Premium and Urbane. The Premium variant, priced at Rs 1.47 lakh (ex-showroom, India), offers a 3.2kWh battery and a TFT display. The Urbane variant, priced at Rs 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom, India), features a 2.9kWh battery and a monochrome display. The upcoming, more affordable variant is expected to be priced below the Urbane, making it a more budget-friendly option for electric scooter buyers.
