Tata transforms auto landscape, launching production at revolutionary Sanand facility

In a groundbreaking development, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM), a subsidiary of the prestigious Tata Motors, has officially commenced production of passenger vehicles at its cutting-edge facility in Sanand, Gujarat. This momentous occasion signals a significant leap forward for the company, underscored by the inauguration of the first Tata-branded car from this state-of-the-art assembly line. The event was graced by the presence of TPEM Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, and key members of the leadership team from the Passenger and Electric vehicles divisions.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited & Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, expressed his pride at witnessing the inaugural car roll off the production line in Sanand. He highlighted the successful retooling of the factory within a remarkable 12-month timeframe, transforming it into a facility capable of accommodating existing products and future models. Chandra extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Gujarat for its unwavering support and acknowledged the indispensable contribution of the dedicated employees.

A Manufacturing Marvel Unveiled

The new facility, strategically located in the industrial hub of GIDC Sanand, spans an expansive 460 acres. Acquired from Ford India on January 10, 2023, it stands as Tata Motors’ second plant in Gujarat dedicated to the manufacturing of both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electric Vehicle (EV) models. Comprising four main shops—Stamping, Body Construction, Paint, and Final Assembly—the facility boasts cutting-edge automation and the latest technology to ensure precision manufacturing.

Technological Marvels: Retooling and Upgrades

Press Shop

The press shop witnessed a transformation with the introduction of new dies for stamping critical skin panels. This enhancement ensures the production of vehicles with the highest quality standards.

Weld Shop

In the weld shop, modifications were implemented across all lines. Additional robots, new grippers, and fixtures were integrated, enhancing efficiency and precision in the welding process.

Paint Shop

The paint shop underwent a comprehensive overhaul, featuring modifications in handling systems, external robot programming, and an internal robotic setup for painting and waxing. These enhancements contribute to the flawless exterior finish of Tata vehicles.

Assembly Shop

The assembly shop experienced a paradigm shift with modifications in handling systems and end-of-line systems, ensuring a seamless and efficient vehicle assembly process.

Workforce Empowerment and Job Creation

With over 1000 employees, including staff and technicians, the plant is set to create an additional 1000 jobs in the next 3 to 4 months in line with production ramp-up plans. Tata Motors has invested in upskilling its workforce, offering opportunities for Diplomas, Bachelor of Engineering, and Master’s Degrees as applicable. As part of the commitment to sustainability, the plant has installed a 50 KW solar rooftop, making strides towards environmental responsibility.

This facility embodies Tata Motors’ commitment to sustainability. The plant is equipped with a 50 KW solar rooftop, marking a significant step towards clean energy. Furthermore, the plant is water-neutral and is projected to become water-positive by December 2024, aligning with Tata Motors’ eco-conscious approach.

The Future Roadmap

As Tata Motors Passenger & Electric Vehicles business has consistently delivered market-beating growth, the company has robust plans to sustain this momentum. The new Sanand facility, with its scalable manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum, presents a strategic advantage. This capacity is extendable to 420,000 units per annum, underscoring Tata Motors’ commitment to meeting the evolving demands of the automotive market.
