The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as the unveiling of the all-new MINI John Cooper Works draws near. Scheduled to debut at the 2024 Paris Motor Show on October 14, this iconic hot hatchback will make history as the first iteration to offer both petrol and electric powertrains. While the official reveal is still weeks away, leaked images of the electric version have already ignited anticipation among enthusiasts.
The MINI John Cooper Works E, as it will be officially known, was recently showcased by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). These leaked images offer a glimpse into the design and technical specifications of this groundbreaking electric hot hatch.
One of the most captivating details revealed is the impressive power output of the MINI JCW E. With a substantial 255bhp, it significantly surpasses the 181bhp of the entry-level MINI Cooper E and even outperforms the 215bhp offered by the higher-spec Cooper SE. This formidable power output positions the JCW E as a formidable competitor to its chief rival, the Alpine A290, even in its most potent form.
However, it’s important to note that the MINI JCW E comes with a slightly higher curb weight of 1,670kg compared to the A290, which weighs around 200kg less. Despite this, the JCW E is expected to deliver a 0-62mph acceleration time of approximately six seconds.
In terms of design, the new hot hatch closely resembles the regular MINI Cooper in Sport trim. It features a more aggressive front and rear bumper, a new rear diffuser, side skirts, a roof spoiler with airblades, 18-inch wheels, and distinctive John Cooper Works badging. The JCW E also boasts unique touches, such as red brake calipers and accents, as well as a chequered-flag graphic on the bootlid.
While the leaked images have focused on the electric variant, it’s worth noting that a petrol-powered MINI JCW is also in the works. The previous generation featured a tuned version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine found in the MINI Cooper S. The new model is expected to continue this trend, potentially delivering around 250bhp.
As the official unveiling of the MINI John Cooper Works approaches, the leaked images have only heightened the anticipation for this highly anticipated model. With its combination of performance, style, and cutting-edge technology, the JCW E is poised to make a significant impact in the electric hot hatch segment.
