MG Teases Sophisticated HS PHEV at Goodwood

MG HS

MG, owned by China’s SAIC Motor, has carved a niche in the market for affordable electric vehicles (EVs) with its MG4 EV. Now, they’re aiming to elevate their offerings with the introduction of a new, more sophisticated MG HS at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. This highly anticipated PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) promises not only a refined look but also a class-leading electric range.

MG Making Strides in the Market

While initial MG models may not have garnered widespread appeal, SAIC has demonstrably improved its offerings. The MG4 EV and others in the lineup have found success, and the recent MG Cyberster electric roadster generated considerable excitement. Now, MG sets its sights on the “budget-conscious” segment seeking a more premium experience.

Sophisticated Design and Unmatched Range

Details are scarce ahead of the official debut, but MG hints at a significant upgrade in sophistication for the new HS. They’ve also made bold claims about the PHEV variant boasting an unrivaled electric range. While specific figures are yet to be revealed, whispers suggest the new HS PHEV could potentially achieve an all-electric driving range of up to 70 miles based on WLTP testing standards.

Building on Existing Success?

While MG remains tight-lipped until the official unveiling, speculation suggests the new HS might borrow heavily from its SAIC sibling, the Roewe RX5. This similarity could extend to the technical specifications as well. The current HS utilizes a 1.5-liter petrol engine generating 160bhp, which might carry over to the new model. However, the spotlight is likely to fall on the PHEV variant.

Unveiling the Future

The Roewe RX5 PHEV equips a 21.4kWh battery that powers an electric motor. Based on WLTP testing, this setup could translate to a highly impressive electric range of up to 70 miles for the new MG HS PHEV. With the official debut happening soon at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the wait to see if MG delivers on its promises won’t be much longer.
