India Installs Over 25,000 Public EV Charging Stations: Government

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in India: Challenges and The Road Ahead

The Indian government has reported the installation of over 25,200 public charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) across the country. Karnataka leads the way with the highest number of charging stations, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Chhattisgarh has installed 271 public EV charging stations.

To accelerate EV adoption and bolster the domestic EV ecosystem, the Ministry of Heavy Industries launched the PM E-DRIVE scheme with a budget of Rs 10,900 crore. This scheme allocates Rs 2,000 crore specifically for the installation of public charging stations.

The Ministry of Power has also issued guidelines to standardize and interconnect EV charging infrastructure across the country. These guidelines aim to create a seamless and reliable charging experience for EV users.

EV Market Growth:

The Indian EV market is witnessing significant growth, driven by increasing adoption. As of December 4, 2024, over 28.55 lakh electric two-wheelers and 2.57 lakh electric four-wheelers have been registered in India.

Battery Swapping on the Rise:

Battery swapping is emerging as a key solution to enhance EV affordability and accessibility. Major auto companies are investing heavily in battery-swapping technologies, particularly for two- and three-wheelers.

Market Projections:

The Indian EV charging market is projected to reach a significant value of $3.7 billion by 2030, fueled by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles.
