With its robust all-metal body and reliable performance, Bajaj Chetak has emerged as one of the most popular electric scooters in the country. In FY2024, Chetak was ranked fourth in the list of best-selling electric two-wheelers. Its market share was 11.31%.
New base variant of Chetak expected to boost sales
Bajaj has launched a new affordable version of Chetak, called Chetak 2901. It is priced at Rs 95,998 ex-Bangalore. There are 5 colour options available – Red, White, Black, Lime Yellow and Sky Blue. It will be available in over 500 showrooms across India. It offers a range of 123 kilometres (ARAI certified).
Eric Vas, President, Urbanite, Bajaj Auto Ltd., shared, “We are happy to announce the commencement of deliveries of Chetak 2901 to Chetak dealerships. The Chetak 2901 is designed, equipped and priced to appeal to customers who currently purchase a gas scooter and are looking for a full-size metal-bodied electric scooter that rivals or even surpasses a gas scooter without hurting their wallet. The Chetak 2901 is available at an on-road price close to that of a gas scooter and has an ARAI-certified range of over 123 km. Consumer retail sales begin on June 15. We believe the Chetak 2901 will significantly expand the electric scooter market.
The Chetak 2901 offers a range of features designed to enhance rider comfort and convenience, including a color digital console, alloy wheels and Bluetooth connectivity. For those looking for additional upgrades, the TecPac package is available. The TecPac offers advanced features such as hill start assist, reverse, sport and economy modes, call and music controls, Follow Me Home lights and enhanced Bluetooth app connectivity.
3 variants of Chetak on offer
This new variant of the Chetak 2901 joins the existing 2 variants of Bajaj Chetak – Chetak Urbane and Chetak Premium. These are equipped with 2.9 kWh and 3.2 kWh batteries and have a range of 113 km and 126 km respectively. Both the scooters have a top speed of 73 kmph. The Chetak Urbane variant is available at a starting price of Rs 1.23 lakh. Chetak Premium starts at Rs 1.47 lakh. Bajaj’s strategy of launching an affordable version of the Chetak is in line with the emerging trends in the industry.
Many electric two-wheeler brands like Ola Electric and Ather have launched affordable variants for consumers. One of the aims is to reduce the negative impact of the cut in government subsidies. It is worth noting that many states have stopped subsidizing electric vehicles altogether as the allocated funds have dried up. Affordable electric vehicles will make it easier for consumers to switch from internal combustion engines to electric power. If the era of internal combustion engines is coming to an end, the new generation of affordable electric two-wheelers would play a crucial role.
Chetak Premium, Chetak Urbane and Chetak 2901 have received approval under the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI)’s Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS). Bajaj Auto Ltd. is a part of the Government of India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electric vehicles.
