Jaguar Land Rover will begin production of its Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India. For the first time in its 54-year history, these iconic models will be produced outside of the UK.
Jaguar Land Rover is owned by Tata Motors. Both models are currently produced exclusively at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull factory in the UK, where they are then exported to around 121 markets worldwide, including India.
Local production is expected to reduce the price of both models by 18 to 22 percent. Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran congratulated Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata for introducing the Jaguar Land Rover brand to the Tata family 15 years ago. He said: “The Range Rover is made here in India, it feels good… It’s a very special moment and I’m proud of it.”
He expects this move to lead to higher sales in India. Chandrasekaran said, “Sales will be high and I am sure the journey ahead will be fantastic.” He added that local production demonstrates the company’s confidence in the Indian market.
Rajan Amba, managing director of Jaguar Land Rover India, told PTI that local production is an important step for the company to make both models available to a wider customer base in the country.
Amba said: “For the first time in the company’s history, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will now be produced in India… This is a big announcement for us as these are our flagship vehicles and have only been produced in Solihull for their 54-year history.”
