Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised Ashok Elluswamy, an Indian-born engineer, for his pivotal role in developing Tesla’s Autopilot technology. On Sunday, Musk highlighted Elluswamy’s contributions to the project in a social media post. Ashok Elluswamy, the first engineer hired for Tesla’s Autopilot team, shared his journey on X.
Musk congratulated him and the AI/Autopilot team for their groundbreaking work, saying, “Without him and our amazing team, we would just be another automaker looking for an independent supplier that doesn’t exist.”
Who is Ashok Elluswamy?
Ashok Elluswamy is a robotics engineer. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has extensive experience in computer vision and perception, as well as planning and control.
He currently lives in San Francisco and was the first engineer hired by Tesla’s Autopilot team.
Mr. Elluswamy has worked at Tesla for 10 years, since June 2014. After two and a half years, he was promoted to Senior Software Engineer. In May 2019, he was promoted to Director of Tesla Autopilot Software, a position he still holds today.
One of his professors described him as one of the “best students,” and Mr. Elluswamy holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communications from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai. He then earned a Master of Science in Robotic Systems Development from Carnegie Mellon University.
Prior to joining Tesla, Mr. Elluswamy worked as a software engineer at WABCO Vehicle Control Systems for over two years and then as a research intern at the Volkswagen Electronics Research Laboratory.
