India’s Flying Taxi Takes Off: Mahindra Unveils Electric e-Taxi Prototype

Air taxis have been considered the pinnacle of technical progress for decades. This may be on track to become a reality in India in 2025. Mahindra & Mahindra Chairman Anand Mahindra has been releasing more details about India’s first flying taxi on his social media account.

Mahindra has been releasing more details and images about the upcoming electric plane. With a range of up to 200 km, this electric e-taxi will be able to take off and land vertically (vertical take-off/landing). Additionally, these electric planes will have a payload capacity of 200 kg. Two passengers can be transported at the same time.

Additional details will remain confidential as the company is still preparing. The company plans for these air taxis to fly at an altitude of 0.5 to 2.0 km and reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. In this way, they will reach their destination much faster than vehicles traveling on the road.

The fare for these taxis is expected to be double that of the street taxis we often use in cities. However, it only takes 10 minutes to cover a distance of 10 km, which is not possible with a road vehicle.

While the prototype is a promising first step, there is still a lot of work to be done before we see these electric taxis in Indian airspace. Regulatory and infrastructure development will be crucial for safe and efficient operations. Still, the company says that once it has a larger fleet, fares will be comparable to an app-based taxi.
