Ducati has recently unveiled its latest 90-degree V-twin engine, a powerful and lightweight powerplant that will be powering various models in 2025. This new engine comes in two configurations, offering either 118 bhp or 113 bhp at 10,750 rpm, while delivering a consistent 9.54 kgm of torque across both versions.
At a mere 54.5 kg, this V-twin engine is the lightest twin-cylinder engine ever produced by Ducati, significantly lighter than its predecessors like the Superquadro 955 and Testastretta Evoluzione. The 90-degree V-twin design inherently balances primary forces, reducing vibrations without the need for a counterbalancer shaft. The backward-angled cylinders, set at 20 degrees, contribute to optimal weight distribution and handling.
The engine’s 96 mm bore and 61.5 mm stroke configuration delivers impressive power and torque characteristics, particularly suitable for road riding. In its higher-powered 120 bhp variant, the addition of a racing exhaust system can further boost power to 124 bhp and torque to 10 kgm. The 113 bhp version, designed for more demanding electrical loads, features reinforced connecting rods and a heavier flywheel for improved high-rpm performance. Both versions also benefit from shorter gear ratios for better low-speed maneuverability.
To enhance performance and fuel efficiency, Ducati has incorporated an Intake Variable Timing (IVT) system into the new engine. This system ensures linear torque delivery and improved throttle response across the entire RPM range. Notably, over 70% of the maximum torque is available at just 3,000 rpm.
The engine also features a water/oil heat exchanger for efficient cooling, a ride-by-wire throttle system with four Power Modes, and a modern gearbox equipped with Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) 2.0 for seamless gear shifts.
This new V-twin engine will eventually power a range of Ducati models, including the DesertX and Multistrada. The initial unveiling of these new models is scheduled for the upcoming Ducati World Premiere on November 5, 2024.
