Toyota Drops “Prime” Name for 2025 Prius and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids

Toyota has simplified its naming convention for plug-in hybrid models in the U.S. and Canada. Starting with the 2025 model year, the Prius and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids will no longer use the “Prime” moniker. Instead, they will be identified simply as PHEV or Plug-in Hybrid, aligning with the terminology used in other markets.

A Clearer Identity

The decision to drop the “Prime” nameplate is intended to make it easier for consumers to differentiate between hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. By using the more straightforward PHEV designation, Toyota aims to provide a clearer understanding of the vehicle’s capabilities.

Blue Dot Emblem Replaces Blue Oval

In addition to the name change, the 2025 Prius and RAV4 PHEVs will feature a new emblem. The blue Toyota oval emblem, previously used to signify hybrid, PHEV, EV, and FCEV models, has been replaced with a blue dot. This change was implemented in the 2024 model year and will continue for the 2025 models.

No Significant Changes

Aside from the rebranding, the 2025 Toyota Prius and RAV4 PHEVs remain largely unchanged from their predecessors. The design, trim levels, equipment, and powertrains are essentially the same as the 2024 models.

Powertrain Performance

The Prius PHEV offers a combined output of 220 horsepower, providing a zippy 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.6 seconds. It boasts an impressive electric range of up to 44 miles and a combined fuel economy rating of 52 mpg.

The RAV4 PHEV delivers a more powerful combined output of 302 horsepower, thanks to its dual electric motors. It offers an electric range of up to 42 miles and a combined fuel economy of 38 mpg.

Limited Availability for RAV4 PHEV

The 2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV will be available in limited quantities starting in late 2024. It is expected to have a slightly higher starting price compared to the 2024 model year. The pricing for the 2025 Prius PHEV has not yet been announced.

Overall, the changes to the Prius and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids for the 2025 model year are relatively minor. The new naming convention and updated emblem provide a clearer and more consistent identity for these electrified vehicles, making it easier for consumers to understand their capabilities.
