Tesla Cybertruck Receives 5-Star NHTSA Safety Rating

Tesla Cybertruck Scores Five-Star Safety Rating

The Tesla Cybertruck has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While achieving top marks overall, the electric pickup truck received four-star ratings in two specific tests: rollover resistance and the passenger-side frontal barrier test, which simulates a head-on collision between two similar vehicles at 35 mph (56 km/h).

Testing, conducted last December by Applus IDIADA KARCO Engineering in California using a 2024 Cybertruck Cyberbeast, revealed positive results in several key areas. The frontal barrier impact test showed complete windshield retention and no intrusion into the windshield’s protected zone. Both driver and passenger doors remained closed during the impact and were operable afterward.

Although the driver and passenger knee airbags did not deploy, Tesla explained that this was intentional for that specific test configuration. The front airbags, however, deployed as designed, effectively protecting the crash test dummies.

The rigid pole side impact test yielded no significant findings, with side airbags deploying as expected. The moving deformable barrier side impact test also produced unremarkable results.

Tesla is likely pleased with the five-star rating, which places the Cybertruck alongside the Ford F-150 Lightning as the only electric pickups to achieve this top safety designation. Other electric trucks, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T, have not yet been rated by NHTSA.

Despite its safety accolades, the Cybertruck comes with a premium price tag, starting at $79,990 and reaching $99,990 for the top-of-the-line Cyberbeast model.
