Rivian has quietly discontinued the under-seat storage compartment from all second-generation R1T and R1S models, leaving many owners puzzled. This change comes months after the launch of the Gen 2 R1 series, which introduced numerous updates, making the omission of this useful feature even more surprising.
Discussions about the removal started circulating on social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and various online forums earlier this week. Some new owners were shocked to find the compartment missing, while others received their vehicles with the drawer intact, leading to widespread confusion. When contacted for clarification, Rivian confirmed that the storage bin was removed from all R1 models in late 2024 but did not specify an exact timeline for the change.
Rivian’s Explanation
“Yes, we removed the passenger seat storage bin from production on all R1 variants in late 2024,” a Rivian representative said.
The spokesperson elaborated, stating, “We continuously evaluate our design and production processes. The passenger seat storage bin had a low utilization rate. Items like smartphones didn’t fit well, so users tended to store their belongings elsewhere. The driver’s seat storage bin, which is still available, remains suitable for small items such as sunglasses and keys.”
The removal has disappointed some owners, particularly as neither the R1T nor the R1S includes a traditional glovebox. While Rivian did not cite cost-cutting as a reason, there’s speculation that this change might be part of broader efforts to streamline production costs. Fortunately, the R1 series still offers other storage options, including compartments in the door panels and larger bins under the rear seats.
Update: As of mid-November, Rivian has removed this passenger cubby for cost-cutting. This has nothing to do with the placement of the 12V being under the passenger seat. https://t.co/BN3phC1bSk

A Trend in Cost Optimization?
Rivian’s move aligns with a growing trend among automakers to trim features that may have limited utility. Although Rivian’s pricing strategy remains competitive, such adjustments could enhance future cost efficiency without significantly impacting the overall user experience.
What’s New in the Gen 2 R1 Series?
Beyond the removal of the under-seat storage, Rivian has introduced several key updates to its second-generation R1 models. The Large and Max battery packs now feature redesigned, more efficient modules that simplify manufacturing and servicing. Additionally, the vehicles come equipped with an upgraded heat pump and a new electrical architecture, which reduces the number of electronic control units (ECUs) by 10 and trims approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of wiring.
Performance has also received a boost. Dual-motor versions now produce 665 horsepower, tri-motor models deliver 850 horsepower, and the top-tier quad-motor variants offer an impressive 1,025 horsepower.
Rivian’s semi-autonomous driving system has also been enhanced. The updated system now includes higher-definition cameras and improved AI for better predictive performance. With 11 cameras and five radars, the system provides superior driving assistance compared to its predecessor.
Despite minor changes, Rivian continues to refine its offerings, balancing innovation with efficiency to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
