Mahindra & Volkswagen Collaborate on Electric SUVs for India

Mahindra And Skoda-Volkswagen

The automotive industry has been buzzing with rumors of a potential partnership between Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and the Volkswagen Group. The collaboration aims to develop electric vehicles (EVs) for both the Indian and international markets. While official details are yet to be confirmed, recent reports suggest that the partnership is progressing steadily.

The Joint Venture Model

According to sources, M&M and Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, are exploring a 50:50 joint venture. This partnership would involve shared costs, technology, and vehicle platforms, enabling both brands to accelerate their EV development and introduce new products to the market.

Focus on Electric SUVs

While the joint venture is expected to cover both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the primary focus will be on developing electric SUVs for the Indian market. This aligns with the growing demand for electric vehicles in India and the Volkswagen Group’s global strategy to transition towards electric mobility.

Manufacturing in India

Both Mahindra and Volkswagen plan to utilize their existing manufacturing facilities in Pune’s Chakan to produce the new electric vehicles. This strategic move will not only help reduce costs but also contribute to the development of India’s EV ecosystem.

Volkswagen’s India Strategy

The Volkswagen Group has been actively exploring partnerships in India to strengthen its presence in the competitive market. Skoda Auto CEO Klaus Zellmer has emphasized India’s importance as a key market outside of Europe. The company recognizes the challenges posed by intense competition and is seeking local partners with a deep understanding of the Indian market.

Previous Collaborations

This is not the first time Mahindra has partnered with a foreign automaker in India. In the past, they have collaborated with Ssangyong and were in discussions with Ford before the latter’s exit from the Indian market.

Mahindra’s EV Ambitions

Mahindra has been actively investing in electric vehicles and has announced plans to invest ₹12,000 crore in the EV business over the next three years. Their first electric vehicle under this new phase, the BE.05 electric SUV, is expected to be launched in the second half of 2025.

Conclusion

While the official announcement of the Mahindra-Volkswagen partnership is still awaited, the recent developments suggest that the collaboration is gaining momentum. The partnership could significantly boost the development and adoption of electric vehicles in India, aligning with the government’s push for electric mobility. As the details of the joint venture unfold, it will be interesting to see how Mahindra and Volkswagen leverage their combined strengths to create innovative and competitive electric vehicles.
