KERC Simplifies EV Charging Installation in Karnataka Apartments

Karnataka Ev Rules

Bengaluru, Karnataka: In a significant boost for electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the state, the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has simplified the process of installing EV charging stations in high-rise buildings and large apartment complexes. This move is expected to accelerate the transition to electric mobility by addressing a major hurdle faced by EV owners.

The KERC has directed the energy department and electricity supply companies (Escoms) to streamline the procedures for setting up EV charging units across the state, with a particular focus on Bengaluru, the EV adoption hub of Karnataka. To ensure transparency and ease of access, the commission has emphasized the need for detailed guidelines to be published on official websites.

Under the new directives, individual flat owners can install EV charging points within their allotted parking spaces by either enhancing their existing power load or opting for a new connection under the EV charging tariff category. The safety of these installations is paramount, with the KERC mandating adherence to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) regulations.

To further streamline the process, the chief electrical inspector has been tasked with establishing norms for housing energy meters, electrical cabling, earthing, and standard wiring diagrams. These guidelines will ensure the safety of both users and vehicles.

The decision to simplify the installation process comes in response to numerous requests from apartment residents, EV promoters, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) who faced challenges in setting up EV charging stations. The KERC has also addressed the issue of charging stations in common areas by outlining the necessary permissions and safety requirements.

To provide comprehensive support to EV owners, Escoms have been instructed to offer servicing for EV charging stations, ensuring uninterrupted charging facilities for residents.

This landmark decision by the KERC is expected to spur the growth of EV infrastructure in Karnataka, making it more convenient for residents to adopt electric vehicles. By removing bureaucratic hurdles and emphasizing safety, the state government has taken a proactive step towards promoting sustainable mobility.
