MG Motor, a joint venture between JSW Group and SAIC Motor Corporation, is gearing up for an aggressive product launch strategy in India. With an ambition to replicate the success story of Maruti Suzuki, MG Motors plans to introduce around 3 new vehicles every year, significantly expanding its product portfolio in the country.
One of the potential contenders in this launch spree could be the MG Yep Plus SUV, a larger and more practical derivative of the Baojun Yep electric vehicle recently launched in China.
Spacious and Practical: MG Yep Plus SUV
The MG Yep Plus SUV is a 5-door, 4-seater version of the Baojun Yep, offering increased passenger and cargo capacity compared to the 3-door model. Developed under the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture, the Yep Plus is expected to be launched in India under the MG Motor brand, capitalizing on MG’s existing brand recognition in the market.
Attractive Price Point for a Feature-Rich SUV
In China, the Baojun Yep Plus carries a price tag ranging from CNY 93,800 to CNY 103,800, which roughly translates to approximately Rs. 10.9 lakh and Rs. 12 lakh in Indian currency (as of April 13, 2024). This positions the MG Yep Plus SUV as an attractively priced offering in the Indian electric vehicle segment.
Design Language: Rugged Yet Refined
The MG Yep Plus SUV inherits the “Square Box+” design language from the Baojun Yep, featuring a boxy silhouette and rugged body cladding that exudes an off-road vibe. The design incorporates several eye-catching elements, including:
- A floating roof for a sleek and modern look
- A flat side-hinged tailgate for easy access to cargo space
- Five exterior color options to cater to diverse preferences
- LED lighting for enhanced visibility and a premium feel

The use of soft-touch plastics and contrasting white stitching elevates the cabin ambience. The center console remains uncluttered due to the absence of a transmission tunnel, similar to the MG Comet EV.

- A large 10.1-inch free-standing infotainment screen for intuitive control over various functions

Performance and Driving Range
The MG Yep Plus SUV is expected to be equipped with a single 75 kW (100 bhp) electric motor powering the front wheels. The possibility of future variants with dual motors and all-wheel drive (AWD) cannot be ruled out. The SUV promises a top speed of 150 km/h and offers four driving modes – Economy+, Economy, Standard, and Sports – to cater to different driving preferences.
The electric motor draws power from a 41.9 kWh battery pack supplied by Guoxuan High-Tech, with support for fast charging. MG Motors claims a CLTC range of 401 km on a single charge, making the Yep Plus SUV a practical choice for everyday commuting and occasional long-distance trips.

The MG Yep Plus SUV is just one piece of the puzzle in MG Motor’s aggressive product launch strategy. The company is also expected to introduce the Baojun Yonduo or Wuling Cloud electric vehicles in India, further solidifying its position as a key player in the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle market.
