Tata Motors is reviving its iconic Sierra SUV, a model that graced Indian roads from 1991 to 2003, with a modern iteration slated for release in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) formats. Recent spy shots indicate that road testing is underway, suggesting a potential launch towards the end of the year.
Captured by automotive enthusiast Vedant Awate in Pune, the heavily camouflaged test mule, believed to be the ICE variant, retains the signature boxy silhouette and commanding road presence that made the original Sierra so memorable. The SUV features a flat front fascia, robust bumper design, and a high-set hood, contributing to its assertive stance. Squarish wheel arches, body cladding, side moldings, and flush door handles define the side profile, while the wide B-pillars, a hallmark of the original Sierra, are prominently featured. Large windows promise panoramic views, and top-tier models are expected to sport 19-inch alloy wheels and ample ground clearance for off-road capabilities. A full-width LED light bar graces both the front and rear.

The interior of the new Sierra is anticipated to offer a premium experience, sharing many features with Tata’s Harrier and Safari models. These include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and an illuminated steering wheel logo. Other expected features include rear AC vents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless smartphone connectivity, and a comprehensive suite of safety features, including multiple airbags, a 360-degree camera, and Level-2 ADAS. Tata Motors is expected to prioritize high safety ratings in crash tests.

The ICE variant of the Sierra is expected to offer both petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel variant will likely utilize the 2.0-liter Stellantis-sourced engine found in the Harrier, producing 170 horsepower and 350 Newton-meters of torque. The petrol variant is expected to feature Tata’s new 1.5-liter turbocharged GDI engine, generating 170 horsepower and 280 Newton-meters of torque. Transmission options are expected to include a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed torque converter automatic, and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Upon its launch, the Tata Sierra will compete with models such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Kia Seltos.
