BMW Unveils Long-Wheelbase X3 L Exclusively for China

BMW X3

BMW has launched the facelifted X3 in China, but with a significant difference: it’s a long-wheelbase version designed specifically for the Chinese market. Recognizing the preference for rear legroom in China, BMW is offering only the extended wheelbase X3 L, with no standard wheelbase model available. This marks the first time BMW has ever created a long-wheelbase variant of the X3.

The Chinese-market X3 L, built locally, boasts a 4.37-inch (111 mm) longer wheelbase than the standard X3 sold elsewhere. This translates to an additional 3.7 inches (96 mm) of rear knee room, all while maintaining the SUV’s balanced 50:50 weight distribution. The new X3 L is also larger overall, measuring 4.9 inches (126 mm) longer and 0.9 inches (25 mm) wider than its predecessor. However, the refreshed design effectively masks the added size.

The entry-level X3 xDrive 25L Luxury features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190 hp and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. While not overly powerful, this engine provides adequate performance, accelerating the X3 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 133 mph (214 km/h).

The top-of-the-line X3 xDrive 30L uses an upgraded version of the same 2.0-liter engine, generating 258 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. This more powerful engine shaves the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time to 6.5 seconds and increases the top speed to 148 mph (239 km/h).

Both X3 L models come standard with features tailored to Chinese buyers. These include LED lighting around the kidney grilles and unique digital services within the infotainment system. Customers can choose from five metallic paint finishes and one Frozen (matte) option.

While official pricing for the 2025 X3 L in China hasn’t been released yet, it will be produced at Plant Lydia, a part of BMW’s joint venture with Brilliance Automotive.
