The MG Astor, a crossover SUV that has garnered significant popularity in Spain, is set to enter a new chapter with the introduction of its hybrid variant. The MG Astor Hybrid+, teased in recent months, is now showcased with official images, revealing exciting updates and enhancements.
Powertrain: A Hybrid Heart
At the core of the MG Astor Hybrid+ lies a self-charging hybrid propulsion system (HEV). This system combines an Atkinson cycle petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a balance of performance and efficiency. The battery pack, a 1.83 kWh NCM lithium-ion unit, enables limited electric-only driving, contributing to a greener footprint.
The hybrid SUV boasts a front-wheel drive system and a 3-speed automatic gearbox. Its eco-friendly credentials are further validated by the ECO environmental badge from the DGT (General Directorate of Traffic), signifying reduced emissions compared to the petrol-only model.
Enhanced Chassis and Performance
Beyond the new hybrid powertrain, the MG Astor Hybrid+ benefits from a refined chassis. MG has meticulously focused on updates that elevate agility, reliability, and safety. The result is a hybrid SUV that excels in both urban and highway environments.
A Fresh Design Language
The MG Astor Hybrid+ showcases a significant departure from its predecessor in terms of design. Adopting the brand’s new design language, as seen in the MG3 and MG HS, the SUV exudes a sportier, refined, and well-balanced aesthetic. The front fascia is completely revamped, featuring new LED headlights, a revised grille, a redesigned bumper, and updated air intakes. The sides and rear also receive attention, with new alloy wheels, tail lights, and a modified rear bumper.
Interior Refinements and Features
While the interiors haven’t been fully revealed, MG has confirmed that the MG Astor Hybrid+ will feature high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The spaciousness and comfort of the current model are expected to be retained. The dashboard is likely to feature a dual-screen setup for the infotainment and instrument panel. Additional features may include power-adjustable front seats, a 360° camera setup, wireless charging, and keyless access and start. The ADAS kit is anticipated to receive updates with new features.
Launch and Pricing
The MG Astor Hybrid+ is slated to make its European debut around September. Given the updates and the new hybrid powertrain, it is expected to be priced higher than the current petrol model, which starts at €17,890. Estimates suggest a potential starting price of around €25,000. An Indian launch for the MG Astor Hybrid+ is anticipated in 2025, where it will compete against established rivals like the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Kushaq, and Taigun.
The MG Astor Hybrid+ represents a significant evolution for the popular crossover SUV. With its enhanced powertrain, refined chassis, and updated design, it is poised to attract a wider audience and solidify MG’s position in the hybrid market.
