Kawasaki has recently unveiled a new version of its popular KLX 230 motorcycle, the Sherpa edition, exclusively for the Japanese market. While the Sherpa shares the same platform as the standard KLX 230, it boasts several distinct design and performance characteristics.
The most noticeable difference lies in the headlight cowl. The Sherpa features a separate visor, giving it a more rugged and off-road-oriented look compared to the single-panel design of the standard model. Additionally, the tank extensions on the Sherpa are smaller and bolted-on, while the standard KLX has integrated, larger tank extensions. The rear section of the Sherpa also appears more minimalistic, with a simpler design that exposes the high-mounted side-slung exhaust pipe.
In terms of performance, the Sherpa offers slightly reduced suspension travel and ground clearance compared to the standard model. However, it weighs 5kg less, making it more agile and nimble. Both versions share the same 233cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine, producing 17.7bhp and 19Nm of torque. Interestingly, the Sherpa boasts slightly higher torque output.
While the Sherpa edition is currently exclusive to Japan, Indian enthusiasts eagerly await the launch of the standard KLX 230, which is expected to take place in December at the India Bike Week in Goa. The estimated price for the Indian market is around Rs 2.50-2.60 lakh (ex-showroom).
