While electric vehicles have been gaining traction, Toyota remains committed to hydrogen fuel cell technology. At the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek 2024, the automaker unveiled a range of hydrogen-related innovations.

One of the most significant announcements was the introduction of portable hydrogen cartridges in Japan. These smaller, lighter tanks aim to make hydrogen a more accessible and familiar energy source. Toyota envisions various applications, including powering fuel cells for electricity generation and even cooking. In collaboration with Rinnai Corporation, they have developed a hydrogen-powered cooker.

Beyond portable cartridges, Toyota showcased its hydrogen-powered GR Corolla race car, which has been competing in endurance races since 2023. The automaker also presented a “sweep energy storage system,” utilizing batteries recovered from end-of-life electrified vehicles. This system aims to maximize battery life and contribute to a stable electricity supply, particularly when combined with renewable energy sources.
