World EV Day: Which Indian States are Leading the Charge in EV Sales?

Electric Vehicles

India’s journey towards electric mobility is heating up, with several states competing to lead the charge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption. This race is not just about embracing new technology but also about fostering eco-friendly mobility solutions that produce zero emissions. As states implement various policies and infrastructures, the battle to achieve the highest rate of EV adoption is more intense than ever.

In light of World EV Day, let’s explore which Indian states are making the most significant strides in promoting EVs, along with the EV sales numbers recorded in 2024 so far.

Uttar Pradesh: Leading in EV Registrations

Uttar Pradesh stands at the forefront of EV adoption, with more than 200,000 electric vehicles registered across the state. A large portion of these registrations comes from three-wheelers, reflecting the state’s robust economic activities and large population. The proactive efforts of the government have further accelerated EV adoption, particularly with the extension of the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy until 2027. The breakdown of EV sales in Uttar Pradesh for 2024 is as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 38,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 160,000 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 2,800 sold

Maharashtra: A Close Second in EV Adoption

Maharashtra closely follows Uttar Pradesh, with over 126,000 EVs registered. The state’s favorable policies have facilitated the early adoption of electric vehicles, while its growing status as an EV manufacturing hub is attracting major players like Tata Motors and Mahindra Electric. Maharashtra’s focus on both EV production and usage is positioning it as a key player in India’s EV landscape. Here’s the breakdown of EV sales in Maharashtra:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 100,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 8,500 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 8,000 sold

Karnataka: A Tech-Savvy Push for EVs

Karnataka has sold over 99,000 EVs in 2024, making it another strong contender in the race for EV leadership. With the Karnataka Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy in place, the state is not only driving EV sales but also focusing on becoming a hub for EV and battery manufacturing. Bengaluru, the state capital, has emerged as a key adopter of electric mobility, thanks to its tech-driven population. The vehicle sales in Karnataka are as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 86,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 4,800 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 6,800 sold

Tamil Nadu: A Dual Strategy of EV Adoption and Manufacturing

Tamil Nadu has sold nearly 73,900 electric vehicles in 2024 and is not only promoting EV adoption but also establishing itself as a leading EV manufacturing hub. Home to major automotive manufacturers, the state is pursuing a dual strategy of fostering EV usage while simultaneously developing its manufacturing infrastructure. Tamil Nadu’s EV sales breakdown is as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 64,000 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 4,200 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 4,600 sold

Bihar: The Unexpected Contender in EV Adoption

Bihar may be an unexpected player in the EV race, but it has made significant progress with over 65,000 EVs sold in 2024. Like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar’s numbers are driven largely by the sale of three-wheelers. The state’s vehicle sales division is as follows:

  • Two-wheeler EVs: Over 10,900 sold
  • Three-wheeler EVs: Over 54,000 sold
  • Four-wheeler EVs: Over 500 sold

Goa: The Leader in EV Penetration

While states with larger populations naturally see higher total EV sales, some smaller states are leading in terms of EV penetration relative to their population. Goa tops this category, with EVs accounting for 14% of all vehicle sales in the state. Tripura follows closely with 13.73% EV penetration, and Chandigarh stands at 13.50%. Other notable states include Delhi at 10.72% and Assam at 9.93%.

Charging Infrastructure: Maharashtra in the Lead

Charging infrastructure is essential for the widespread adoption of EVs, and Maharashtra is currently leading the charge with 3,079 charging stations across the state. Delhi ranks second with 1,886 charging stations, while Karnataka has 1,081 stations. These numbers reflect data available until February 2024 and showcase the importance of a strong EV support system for further adoption.

Conclusion

India’s push towards electric mobility is gaining momentum, with various states competing to lead the EV revolution. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar are emerging as key players in the market, each contributing to the country’s growing EV footprint. Meanwhile, smaller states like Goa are showing impressive EV penetration rates, and charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, particularly in Maharashtra.

As the battle for EV adoption continues, it is clear that India’s future in mobility is electric.
