Air India Group has announced plans to build a large Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility on 35 acres of land at Bengaluru International Airport. This significant investment reaffirms the airline’s commitment to building a self-reliant aviation ecosystem in India.
Once operational, the MRO facility is expected to generate over 1,200 jobs for skilled aviation engineers. Additionally, the project will support over 200 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Karnataka, strengthening the local supply chain.
A Crucial Hub for Maintenance
The new MRO facility will serve as a pivotal hub for maintaining Air India’s expanding fleet. As the airline modernizes and extends its global reach, this facility will significantly enhance its aircraft maintenance operations in the region. Earlier this year, Air India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to set up these facilities in Bengaluru and has partnered with SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) for its development.

State-of-the-Art Facilities
The MRO facility will feature mega hangars capable of accommodating both wide and narrow-body aircraft, including a dedicated paint hangar. Equipped with cutting-edge aircraft maintenance technology, such as overhead tele platforms, cranes, and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in India, the facility aims to be on par with the best MRO facilities worldwide.
Self-Reliance and Training
By 2025, Air India aims to become more self-reliant in fleet maintenance. This includes expanding in-house line maintenance facilities across its network, refurbishing a wide-body aircraft hangar in Mumbai, and constructing a new wide-body hangar in Delhi. To ensure a steady flow of skilled engineers for its fleet, Air India plans to open a Basic Maintenance Training Organisation (BMTO) in Bengaluru by 2025.
