Tarun Garg, CEO of Hyundai Motor India, confirmed in a recent chat that the first electric vehicle from his brand, which is targeting high sales, will be launched in January 2025. The model in question is undoubtedly the electric version of the Creta, which has been tested multiple times in India and abroad.
He also noted that all the lessons learned from the popular Ioniq 5 will be incorporated into the upcoming mid-size electric SUV. Before the official launch, the South Korean automaker is expected to start production of the Creta EV this calendar year. It will directly compete with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX and its sibling Toyota Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra XUV 400, MG ZS EV and others.
It seems that the Hyundai Creta EV will arrive before the Maruti Suzuki eVX, but the zero-emission Tata Curvv is expected to be launched in the coming months. It is no secret that the Creta EV will have a lot in common with the combustion-engined Creta and we expect the equipment list, interior and body panels to be identical to its sibling to achieve economies of scale.
However, the exterior will feature notable differences, including a lockable grille, unique front and rear bumpers, dual-tone alloy wheels with aerodynamic inserts, a front-mounted charging port, different LED lighting signatures and other minor cosmetic updates. The Hyundai Creta EV will likely come with the same electric motor that comes with the base Kona Electric.
It can produce around 138 bhp and 255 Nm of peak torque. Hyundai is expected to use a 45 kWh battery pack in the Creta EV and it could have a range of over 450 km on a single charge. It will likely have bi-directional charging and DC fast charging capabilities.
Hyundai’s global partnership with LG Chem and HMG’s recent tie-up with Indian battery maker Exide could contribute to the development of the five-seater. The Creta EV will play a major role in the brand’s plans to introduce five electric vehicles in the domestic market by 2030.
