The Suzuki e Vitara, unveiled today in Milan, marks the production version of the Maruti eVX concept. This midsize electric SUV, Suzuki’s first EV for India, is set to compete in a growing market alongside models like the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV and Mahindra BE 05.
Although the global debut occurred in Italy, production will take place at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India, with 50% of the vehicles slated for export to Europe and Japan. The e Vitara will launch in India in March 2025 following its national debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025, with a European release expected in June 2025.
Design and Dimensions
The e Vitara stays true to the eVX concept, closely resembling both versions displayed at the 2023 Auto Expo and the Japan Mobility Show. While some design elements have been softened, the SUV retains its rugged, muscular look. Key features include dark cladding, tri-slash LED lights, charging ports on the front flanks, and a bold rear wheel arch design. Wheel sizes vary from 18-inch alloys on lower trims to 19-inch alloys for the AWD variant.
Measuring 4,275mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,635mm in height, the e Vitara aligns with competitors like the Hyundai Creta EV. It boasts a 2,700mm wheelbase, hinting at a spacious interior, and has 180mm of ground clearance, ideal for Indian roads. Curb weight ranges between 1,702kg and 1,899kg depending on the variant.
Platform, Battery, and Range
Built on the new Heartect-e skateboard platform, the e Vitara incorporates eAxles, combining the motor and inverter for efficiency. This platform was co-developed with Toyota, and a similar model from Toyota is expected to launch in 2025.
The SUV will offer two battery options—49kWh and 61kWh—with the larger battery supporting an AWD version dubbed AllGrip-e. The batteries use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) ‘blade’ cells from BYD, and unlike many Indian EV manufacturers, Maruti-Suzuki will import fully assembled battery packs from BYD.
The AWD system includes a Trail mode, simulating a limited-slip differential by braking the wheels without traction. While official range figures are yet to be confirmed, the 61kWh battery is expected to offer a range exceeding 500km on global test cycles. The 49kWh battery produces 144hp, while the 61kWh version offers 174hp. The AWD variant adds a 65hp rear motor, bringing total output to 184hp and 300Nm of torque.
Interior and Features
The e Vitara’s interior represents a significant step forward for Suzuki, with modern features like a floating dual-screen infotainment system, a gloss-black floating center console, and twin-spoke flat-bottom steering. The dashboard is horizontally stacked, with brushed silver accents on the rectangular air vents. Key features include an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, drive modes, hill descent control, single-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging, and ADAS features like Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist.
The rear seats offer adjustable headrests, split-folding options, and ISOFIX child seat mounts, ensuring a balance between comfort and practicality. However, it remains to be seen how well the design accommodates the underfloor battery pack without compromising seating comfort.
Pricing and Launch
Initially scheduled for an October 2024 launch, the e Vitara’s release was delayed to March 2025 due to technical challenges, particularly in software development. Suzuki aims to deliver a highly reliable EV, prioritizing quality and ease of use.
Expected pricing starts at around Rs 20 lakh for the base 49kWh model, with the top-spec AWD variant reaching Rs 30 lakh. This positions the e Vitara competitively against rivals like the MG ZS EV and upcoming Mahindra BE 05 and Hyundai Creta EV.
In the race for EV dominance, Suzuki’s e Vitara will be the first of several models built on the Heartect-e platform, including an all-electric MPV. With India’s top automaker stepping into the EV segment, the competition is set to intensify.
