In a bizarre incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district, a man was issued a fine of Rs 1,000 for not wearing a helmet while driving his car. The unusual nature of the incident has sparked a debate about the accuracy of automated traffic surveillance systems.
Tushar Saxena, a journalist residing in Rampur district, was surprised to receive a message informing him of the fine. Initially dismissing it as a mistake, Saxena was taken aback when he received further notifications via email and message.
Saxena claimed that he had never driven his Hyundai Grand i10 Nios in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district, where the alleged violation took place on November 9 last year. Despite his protests, the police insisted that he pay the fine or face legal action.

He contacted the traffic police and was told that he was fined for driving his 4-wheeler vehicle without a #helmet.
This is hilarious but questions the effectiveness of our #traffic control? pic.twitter.com/1u4WGsm6ik
This isn’t the first instance of such a peculiar error. In Jhansi, a similar incident occurred where a man was fined for not wearing a helmet while driving an Audi car. Bahadur Singh Parihar, from Nandu Colony, took the unusual step of actually wearing a helmet while driving his car to contest the challan.
The incidents highlight potential errors in automated camera surveillance systems, which are increasingly being used by traffic authorities to improve road safety. These systems, designed to catch violations in real-time, may sometimes misinterpret situations or be subject to human oversight.
As these cases demonstrate, the accuracy of automated traffic enforcement systems remains a concern. While they are valuable tools for improving road safety, it is essential to have mechanisms in place to address errors and ensure fairness.
