In a significant move that underscores the automaker’s commitment to design excellence, Ford has announced the appointment of Todd Willing as its new head of design. Willing, a seasoned Ford veteran with a 21-year career, will oversee the design of all Ford and Lincoln models worldwide, succeeding Anthony Lo who recently departed from the role.
A Lifelong Passion for Design
Willing’s journey with Ford began in high school when he participated in a work experience program at the Australian Design Studio in Melbourne. This early exposure ignited his passion for design, leading him to pursue a degree in industrial design at Monash University.
A Proven Track Record
Throughout his career at Ford, Willing has held leadership positions in various regions, including Japan, Germany, the UK, the US, and Australia. His influence is evident in a wide range of successful models, from the iconic 2007 Mondeo and 2009 Fiesta to the acclaimed 2010 Focus and 2017 Ford GT supercar. The latter, a standout achievement, is celebrated for its striking silhouette and sophisticated aerodynamics.
Shaping the Future of Ford Design
In recent years, Willing has focused on the design of Ford trucks and SUVs, playing a pivotal role in shaping the look and feel of models like the F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, Bronco, Maverick, Explorer, and Expedition. His expertise in this area has been instrumental in solidifying Ford’s position as a leader in the truck and SUV market.
Prior to his appointment as head of design, Willing served as the global design director of Ford Model e, the division responsible for the brand’s electric vehicles. This role provided him with valuable insights into the design considerations for the electric era.
A Global Vision
Willing’s appointment underscores Ford’s commitment to design excellence on a global scale. His expertise and leadership will be instrumental in shaping the future of Ford’s design language and ensuring that the brand’s vehicles continue to resonate with customers around the world.
