MG Astor Debuts Globally with Powerful Hybrid Engine

2025 MG Astor

MG Motor has unveiled its second-generation ZS for the European and Australian markets, which will be known as the ZS Hybrid+ in these regions. This revamped model features a significant redesign, enhanced equipment, a more refined interior, and improved powertrains. It’s set to make its debut in the Indian market next year, where it will compete against strong contenders like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Exterior Updates

The 2025 MG Astor, which is the Indian-spec version of the ZS, has undergone a substantial exterior transformation. The front fascia now boasts a new octagonal grille, sportier bumpers, and redesigned headlights. The bonnet has been slightly extended, and the nose has a more flattened profile. The overall design appears to have drawn inspiration from the MG3 hatchback. Notably, the MG emblem has been repositioned to the top of the front bumper from its previous location on the grille.

At the rear, the facelift features new tail lamps, a redesigned tailgate, and a new bumper. The registration plate has been moved to the center of the tailgate, a departure from its position on the rear bumper in the previous model. Additionally, the window area is now larger, and the wheels have been given a new design. The SUV also features clean body lines and stylish roof rails, contributing to a more imposing and upright stance.

Interior Enhancements

Inside the second-generation ZS, the cabin has been significantly upgraded with modern features and a more refined design. The SUV boasts a new 12.3-inch touchscreen, restyled AC vents, a redesigned center console, a 360-degree camera, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, rear privacy glass, leather upholstery, heated front seats, keyless entry, automatic headlights, a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated front seats and steering, and a new steering wheel.

The interior exudes a premium feel, and the predominantly black color scheme is likely to appeal to many. The gear selector has been redesigned to resemble the controls of a yacht, and the center console includes two large cup holders and a vertically arranged charging pad.

Safety Features

Similar to its predecessor, the new Astor facelift will be equipped with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), along with other safety technologies such as Active Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and more.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood, the 2025 Astor receives a new strong hybrid powertrain that delivers a combined output of 192 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque. This setup consists of a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 100 kW electric motor. The petrol engine alone is capable of producing 101 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. The hybrid component of the powertrain draws its energy from a 1.83 kWh battery pack.

The new ZS is claimed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and has a top speed of 167 km/h. Fuel efficiency is equally impressive, with a WLTP rating of 23.55 km/l. It’s worth noting that the WLTP rating is generally more reflective of real-world fuel consumption compared to the ARAI rating.

Launch and Pricing

With its hybrid powertrain, the new ZS will pose a strong challenge to competitors like the Grand Vitara, Hyryder, Creta, and Seltos. The new MG ZS is priced at £21,995 in the UK, which translates to approximately ₹24.39 lakh. When launched in India, the new Astor facelift is expected to be priced in the range of ₹9.98 lakh to ₹18.08 lakh.

While MG Motor India hasn’t revealed the exact launch timeline for the next-generation Astor (ZS), it is anticipated to be one of the eight products in the company’s pipeline. MG has aggressive product plans for the Indian market and aims to introduce a new product every six months.
