Mahindra is gearing up to launch the larger, five-door Thar. Expected to make its first appearance on August 15 this year, the longer Thar has been undergoing extensive testing in recent years. Recent sightings suggest it’s nearing production stage.
The latest spy images reveal interesting details about the upcoming five-door Thar, rumored to be christened ‘Thar Armada.’ The latest test mule, reportedly spotted in Pune, has a rear bumper covered in black and yellow stickers. This likely indicates ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) testing emissions and safety, although no exhaust emission testers are visible in the photos. This could suggest the Thar is in its final stages of testing.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Exterior and Interior
The latest spy images showcase new 18-inch, two-tone black and silver alloy wheels. The spare wheel also appears to be 18 inches. The overall design retains the boxy silhouette with a flat roofline, tall pillars, square wheel arches, round headlights, vertical taillights, and large running boards.
The spy images also offer a glimpse of the interior, revealing a revised dashboard layout with a prominent, standalone touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument console. Similar to the recently launched five-door Force Gurkha, the five-door Thar is expected to be offered in both five-seater and seven-seater configurations. The five-seater layout should provide more legroom for rear passengers and a larger boot.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Specs and Expected Features
Beyond the fully digital instrument console and touchscreen infotainment system, the new five-door Thar is expected to boast new connected car features via AdrenoX, push-button start/stop, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, manual day/night IRVM, electrically retractable ORVMs, and a rear center armrest. A power sunroof is a possibility, but not confirmed.
Safety features on the five-door Thar likely include six airbags, a 360° surround view system, and front parking sensors. Higher trims might get four-wheel disc brakes. Previous reports suggest the five-door Thar will also be equipped with ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and driver drowsiness detection.
Engine and Transmission
The five-door Thar is expected to retain the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines, but with possible retuning for enhanced performance in the larger vehicle. Both engines will likely be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
Four-wheel drive with a low-speed transfer case will likely be standard across all variants. A limited-slip differential might be offered on select variants, particularly diesel trims.
