Force Gurkha RWD: Coming Soon and More Affordable?

Force Gurkha

The iconic Force Gurkha received an update this year alongside the launch of its 5-door version. This off-roader has traditionally come standard with four-wheel drive (4WD). However, a recent RTO document hints at a potential new rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant for the Gurkha, which could bring a welcome price reduction.

The good news is, the RWD variant is unlikely to compromise on features or equipment. As the Gurkha currently only comes in a fully loaded trim, the RWD version is expected to retain the same updated features as the 4WD model. This includes a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, manual climate control, dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The engine is also expected to remain unchanged. The Gurkha will likely pack the same 2.6-liter diesel engine that produces 140 PS and 320 Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. So, performance should remain similar between the 4WD and RWD versions.

The real benefit of the RWD variant lies in its affordability. While the exact price difference is unknown, removing the 4WD system can significantly impact the SUV’s price tag. For reference, the Mahindra Thar’s RWD variant is over Rs 3.5 lakh cheaper than its 4WD counterpart. We can expect the Gurkha’s RWD version to fall under Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a much more attractive option for budget-conscious adventure seekers.

While Force Motors hasn’t officially confirmed the launch of the RWD Gurkha, rumors suggest it could arrive later this year. With the current 4WD Gurkha priced at Rs 16.75 lakh (ex-showroom) and directly competing with the Mahindra Thar, a more affordable RWD variant could shake up the off-road SUV market.
