The father of the 17-year-old boy involved in a fatal car accident that left two people dead has been arrested by the Pune police in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. In addition, the owners of certain bars where alcohol was served to minors were also arrested.
The accident took place early Sunday morning in Kalyani Nagar area of Pune. According to police reports, the luxury Porsche driven by the 17-year-old collided with a motorcycle, killing Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta on the spot. The accident, captured by video cameras, showed the car traveling in a narrow lane at an estimated speed of 200 km/h.
The case has now been transferred to the crime branch of Pune police. Pending the trial court’s decision, the Pune police have booked the boy’s father under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act. These sections refer to the intentional abandonment of a child and the supply of narcotics to a minor, respectively.
Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both IT engineers, were returning from a meeting when their motorcycle was hit from behind by a speeding Porsche around 2:15 am. Both died instantly.
According to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the minor behind the wheel of the car was celebrating his Class 12 results at a local pub where he was seen consuming alcohol before the accident. The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25 years, making it illegal for the establishment to serve it. Therefore, bar owners are also prosecuted for serving alcohol to minors.
The aftermath of the incident was marked by intense public outrage, particularly after the Juvenile Justice Board’s decision to grant bail to the minor, just 15 hours after his arrest. The commission also imposed a series of rehabilitative conditions, including mandatory counseling, a drug treatment program and a 300-word essay on traffic safety. This moderate reaction was highly criticized given the seriousness of the accident.
Reacting to the bail order, the Pune police filed an application in the sessions court to try the youth as an adult. This approach is based on the conviction that the seriousness of the crime requires stricter judicial control. “We take yesterday’s incident seriously. We have taken action under Section 304 of the IPC, which is non-bailable as it is a heinous offence,” Commissioner Kumar said.
In addition, the police have taken legal action against the pub where the minor was seen drinking. The owners face serious charges for providing alcohol to the minor, which contributed to the tragic events that followed.
