Chennai to Increase Pink Bus Fleet for Women’s Safety

MTC To Roll Out Pink Deluxe Buses

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai is taking steps to improve the safety and comfort of women commuters by repainting some of its red deluxe buses pink. This initiative aims to increase the availability of pink buses, which are specifically designed for women’s safety.

The older pink buses, which are primarily pink at the front and back, are showing signs of wear and tear. While MTC has introduced newer blue BSVI buses in pink services, the demand for pink buses outstrips the current supply. To address this, MTC has decided to temporarily convert some of its red deluxe buses into pink buses for regular services.

With over 700 red deluxe buses in operation, MTC plans to repaint a selection of these buses from its 30 depots across the city. This move has been welcomed by transport officials and public transport advocates. K Anbazhagan of the TN Transport Workers’ Federation expressed satisfaction with the decision, as it will provide women with more comfortable travel options.

Santhapriyan Kamaraj of TNSTC Enthusiasts emphasized the need for better maintenance of the pink bus fleet, as many of them are in poor condition and overcrowded. He also highlighted the importance of expanding pink bus services to meet the growing demand from commuters.

By increasing the number of pink buses in service, MTC aims to provide more accessible and safer transportation options for women in Chennai. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to improve public transportation in the city and cater to the specific needs of female commuters.
