MG Unveils ES5 Electric SUV as ZS EV Replacement

MG ES5

SAIC-MG has unveiled a fresh electric SUV in China, the MG ES5. This model is poised to step into the shoes of the outgoing ZS EV in overseas markets like Europe, the UK, and Australia. Built on the same EV-dedicated platform as the MG4 hatchback, the ES5 boasts a larger footprint and a more streamlined design compared to its predecessor.

While the MG ZS received a new generation for 2025, it opted for a hybrid-only approach, abandoning the fully electric variant. Instead of sticking to a similar design for the ZS EV’s successor, MG chose to introduce a completely different model, leveraging the latest advancements in its electric vehicle technology.

The ES5 showcases a clean and modern aesthetic, distinguishing itself from MG’s internal combustion engine-powered models with a grille-less front fascia. The bumper intakes echo the design of the MG Cyberster roadster, while the split LED headlights are sleeker and more aggressive than before. Although the side profile is fairly conventional, the full-width taillights share a resemblance to those found on the MG4.

The electric SUV measures in at 4,476 mm in length, surpassing the outgoing ZS EV by 162 mm. This additional length primarily benefits the wheelbase, which has been extended to 2,730 mm.

Inside, the ES5 features a flat-bottom steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment touchscreen, and a floating center console.

Sharing the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) with the MG4 hatchback, the ES5 is powered by a single electric motor positioned on the rear axle. This motor delivers 168 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. While it’s uncertain at this time, there’s a possibility that the model could receive more powerful dual-motor versions in the future.

In the Chinese market, the SUV will offer three options for the ultra-slim lithium iron phosphate battery pack, produced by the SAIC-CATL joint venture. According to Chinese MIIT filings, the largest battery will have a capacity of 62.2kWh, providing a maximum range of 525 km under the CLTC protocols.

The anticipated market launch of the MG ES5 in export markets is slated for 2025. In Europe, it will compete with subcompact SUVs such as the Kia EV4 and the Peugeot E-2008. However, its size aligns more closely with models in the compact SUV segment.
