These facilities are designed to cater to the diverse needs of travelers, ranging from separate parking for cars, buses, and trucks to essential services like restaurants, low-cost dhabas, telephone booths, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), fuel stations, and minor repair shops.
Government’s Vision for Traveler Comfort
The government’s vision is clear — to provide a holistic travel experience by integrating a variety of amenities along NHs. These facilities aim to offer more than just rest stops; they are envisioned as comprehensive spaces that enhance the overall well-being of travelers. The blueprint includes separate parking areas for different types of vehicles, ensuring an organized and hassle-free parking experience.
Planned and Systematic Development
As part of major highway improvement projects, wayside amenities have become integral components. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has identified approximately 70 sites for the development of these facilities. To ensure the efficient execution of this ambitious plan, a Project Management Consultant (PMC) has been appointed. The PMC’s role is crucial in overseeing the project’s implementation and engaging specialized firms to develop and operate these facilities.
Access Permissions and License Agreements
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways plays a pivotal role in facilitating access permissions for retail outlets along NHs. Retailers granted this access are bound by a license agreement that mandates the provision of essential facilities. According to the agreement, retail outlets must offer clean and accessible toilets as well as drinking water facilities, ensuring the well-being of travelers.
Comprehensive Amenities for Passenger Convenience
The proposed amenities are tailored to meet the diverse needs of passengers, creating a travel experience that goes beyond the ordinary. These amenities encompass a wide range of services, including:
1. Fuel Station
Ensuring that travelers have access to fuel, the facilities will house well-equipped fuel stations to keep journeys uninterrupted.
2. Electric Charging Facilities
In alignment with the growing trend of electric vehicles, charging facilities will be available, promoting sustainable travel options.
3. Food Court
A diverse range of culinary options will be offered in food courts, catering to various tastes and preferences.
4. Retail Shops
Travelers can indulge in shopping at retail outlets offering a variety of products, adding a touch of convenience to their journey.
5. Bank ATM
Financial transactions will be a breeze with strategically located ATMs, providing easy access to banking services.

7. Medical Clinic
For any unforeseen health concerns, on-site medical clinics will be available to address travelers’ health needs promptly.

Maintaining hygiene standards, the facilities will include toilets equipped with shower facilities for a refreshing break.

11. Driver Dormitory
Recognizing the needs of long-haul drivers, dormitory facilities will be provided, offering a comfortable resting space.
12. Village Hatt for Promotion of Local Handicrafts
Promoting local culture and craftsmanship, these amenities will include spaces dedicated to showcasing and selling local handicrafts.
