Yamaha has revealed a novel hybrid powertrain, designated SPHEV (Series Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle), showcasing their continued commitment to innovative technology aimed at enhancing the rider experience. This system, currently being tested on an XMax 125 scooter, integrates a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) with a dual-electric motor setup, signaling a potential shift in how mid-sized and larger two-wheelers are powered.

The SPHEV system centers around a 125cc gasoline engine working in conjunction with two electric motors. One motor directly powers the rear wheel, acting as the primary drive, while the second, linked to the engine’s crankshaft, functions primarily as a generator but can also contribute to propulsion. This flexible configuration allows for a variety of operational modes, managed by a sophisticated vehicle control unit (VCU), battery, and inverter.

The system offers a range of driving modes, including a silent, all-electric mode for low-speed maneuvering in noise-sensitive areas. As speed increases, the ICE seamlessly engages to provide sustained power. For rapid acceleration, a “Boost” mode activates, leveraging both electric motors and the ICE in varying degrees. “Dual Boost” utilizes the engine and rear wheel motor, while “Triple Boost” adds the generator motor for maximum power output.

While currently in the research and development phase, this SPHEV technology demonstrates Yamaha’s ambition to create versatile and efficient hybrid powertrains. Specific details regarding the electric motor and battery specifications remain undisclosed. The public may see a further evolved version of this concept at the EICMA 2025, though it is unclear whether this is solely a technological exercise or a prelude to a commercially viable product. The key question remains whether this complex system can translate into tangible benefits for everyday riders.
