In the highly competitive world of ultra-budget electric vehicles, innovation is key to staying ahead. The SAIC-GM-Wuling partnership has embraced this philosophy, unveiling a completely redesigned version of its iconic Hong Guang Mini EV. Departing from its previous boxy design, the new model features a curvier silhouette and introduces a practical five-door variant for the first time.
A Market Leader Gets a Fresh Look
Since its launch in 2020, the Hong Guang Mini EV has achieved immense success, with over 1.4 million units sold in China. However, increasing competition has led to a decline in sales over the past two years. In response, Wuling has opted for a comprehensive overhaul to maintain its position as a market leader.
Rounded Design and Compact Dimensions
The new Hong Guang Mini EV adopts a softer, more inviting design while retaining its compact and playful personality. Inspired by Wuling’s Bingo EV supermini, the updated model features rounded headlights, a streamlined silhouette, and small 13-inch wheels. Despite the design shift, it remains unmistakably a Mini EV.
A key addition is the five-door variant, which significantly enhances practicality compared to the original three-door version. Both versions share identical front and rear styling, with the extra doors being the primary distinguishing feature.
Improved Space and Modern Interior
The new Mini EV has grown in size to offer better interior space. Measuring 3,256 mm (128.2 inches) in length, 1,510 mm (59.4 inches) in width, and 1,578 mm (62.1 inches) in height, it is 336 mm (13.2 inches) longer than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been stretched by 250 mm (9.8 inches), now measuring 2,190 mm (86.2 inches), providing more room, especially for rear passengers.
Inside, the cabin has been modernized with a redesigned dashboard featuring a dual-display digital cockpit, physical climate control knobs, and a gear selector positioned between the seats. The extended dimensions result in a more spacious and comfortable interior.
Familiar Powertrain and Range
Under the hood, the new Hong Guang Mini EV retains the same rear-mounted electric motor producing 40 hp (30 kW), as seen in the most powerful version of the previous model. Power is provided by a lithium iron phosphate battery, though its capacity has not been disclosed. While range figures are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be similar to the outgoing model’s maximum of 280 km (170 miles) using a 26 kWh battery.
Availability and Pricing
The new Hong Guang Mini EV is set to enter the market soon, with orders expected to open shortly. Early models have already been spotted in Chinese dealerships, signaling an imminent launch. While official pricing remains undisclosed, it is unlikely to deviate significantly from the current model’s starting price of ¥32,800 (approximately $4,500).
This redesign aims to solidify the Hong Guang Mini EV’s appeal in the ultra-budget EV segment, combining modern aesthetics, enhanced practicality, and its signature affordability.
