Malaysia’s Proton has taken its first step into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of the e.MAS 7, a compact SUV. While the vehicle is positioned as a modern and stylish entry into the EV world, it largely mirrors the Geely Galaxy E5, offering a straightforward badge-engineering approach that doesn’t reinvent the wheel. Despite this, the e.MAS 7 does manage to deliver contemporary aesthetics and competitive pricing.
Dimensions and Design
The Proton e.MAS 7 measures 4,615 mm in length (181.7 inches) with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108.3 inches). Visually, it’s nearly identical to the Geely Galaxy E5, save for a Proton logo on the hood and the absence of Geely’s illuminated grille. Its design cues borrow heavily from Porsche, with elements like full-width LED taillights and sleek surface sculpting reminiscent of the Porsche Cayenne. The color palette includes Quartz Rose—a shade strikingly similar to the Porsche Macan EV’s Provence hue—along with Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, and Lithium White. The interior features Indigo Blue accents, aiming to evoke a sense of affordable luxury.
Performance and Specifications
Under the hood, the e.MAS 7 shares its foundation with its Geely counterpart, built on the Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA). It features a single front-mounted electric motor producing 215 hp and 320 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 6.9 seconds. This makes it Proton’s quickest vehicle to date, though its performance is average for the segment.
Buyers can choose between two battery options: a 49.52 kWh pack offering a WLTP range of 345 km (214 miles) or a larger 60.22 kWh pack with a range of 410 km (255 miles). Proton claims the battery retains 90.5% health after 921 complete cycles, equating to approximately 400,000 km (250,000 miles).
Competitive Pricing
Where the e.MAS 7 truly stands out is its affordability. Prices range from RM109,800 ($24,400) to RM123,800 ($27,500), significantly undercutting its main competitor, the BYD Atto 3, which starts at RM149,800 ($33,259). As Malaysia’s best-selling EV, the Atto 3 sets a high benchmark, but Proton’s pricing strategy could make the e.MAS 7 an attractive alternative for budget-conscious buyers.
With its debut, Proton enters the EV market with a vehicle that combines Porsche-inspired styling, reasonable performance, and competitive pricing, offering a practical choice for consumers seeking an affordable electric SUV.
