China’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to heat up with the introduction of the iCar V23, a new offering from Chery’s electric vehicle brand developed in collaboration with Xiaomi-owned Zhimi Technology. This head-turning SUV boasts a unique design that blends iconic off-roader elements with a modern, electric soul.
Rugged Design Inspired by Off-Road Legends
The iCar V23’s exterior is a captivating fusion of classic off-road aesthetics and contemporary electric vehicle design. Round LED headlights and a boxy silhouette reminiscent of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 establish a sense of ruggedness. The front bumper and flat windshield channel the Jeep Wrangler’s spirit, while minimalist surfacing and side gills evoke the Land Rover Defender. Borrowing from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the rear end features low-mounted LED taillights and a storage box mounted on the tailgate, reminiscent of a spare tire carrier.
Tech-Forward Interior with a Touch of Retro
The iCar V23’s interior embraces the modern EV trend with a large infotainment display on the dashboard. A fusion of black and white leather upholstery creates a luxurious ambiance. Uniquely integrating a Defender-style steering wheel with rectangular A/C vents adds a touch of retro flair. The iCar V23 prioritizes safety with an array of sensors strategically placed around the bodywork to support Level 2+ Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Performance and Availability
While detailed specifications remain under wraps, the iCar V23 is confirmed to be available in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. Media reports suggest single and dual electric motor options, powered by CATL battery packs. The driving range is estimated to exceed 400 km (249 miles) for the AWD version and surpass 500 km (311 miles) for the RWD variant.
The official unveiling of the iCar V23 took place on April 12, followed by its public debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. Chery plans a second-half-of-2024 launch in China, with the Baojun Yep Plus from SAIC, Wuling, and GM serving as its primary competitor.
A Collaborative Future for Chery and Xiaomi
The iCar V23 marks the beginning of a fruitful partnership between Chery and Xiaomi’s Zhimi Technology. Chinese media reports indicate six to eight new electric vehicles are planned for launch in China over the next three years, solidifying their commitment to the ever-evolving EV landscape.
