Saoutchik Returns: A New Era of Coachbuilding

Saoutchik

The world of coachbuilding is experiencing a resurgence, driven by a growing demand for exclusive and limited-production vehicles. One of the most iconic names from the golden age of coachbuilding, Saoutchik, is making a triumphant comeback after nearly 70 years of absence.

A Modern Interpretation of a Classic

Teasers released by Saoutchik offer glimpses of the upcoming 300 GTC model. The car proudly displays the Mercedes emblem, hinting at a luxurious two-seater roadster with a strong emphasis on design and craftsmanship.

Inspired by the storied past of the original Saoutchik firm, the 300 GTC showcases a sleek rear end reminiscent of the 1954 Mercedes 300 SL. Twin exhaust pipes confirm its ICE-powered nature, staying true to Saoutchik’s roots. A fabric retractable roof, an elongated hood, and a narrow windshield complete the design details revealed so far.

While the exact production model serving as the base for the coachbuilding special remains uncertain, the Mercedes SL seems like a likely candidate given its reputation for luxury and performance.

A Legacy Revived

The original Saoutchik firm, founded in 1906 by Iakov Saoutchik, gained recognition for its bold and extravagant designs. Based in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, Saoutchik catered to an elite clientele, including royalty and Hollywood stars. However, economic challenges and a declining market led to the company’s bankruptcy in 1955.

A New Chapter for Saoutchik

In 2024, the Saoutchik name has been revived by Carossiers Saoutchik, a new entity based in Hippolytushoef, Netherlands. Led by Dutch designer Ugur Sahin and German tuner Pogea Racing GmbH, the project aims to blend vintage prestige with modern expertise.

The new Saoutchik seeks to recapture the essence of the original firm, offering luxury, innovation, and exclusivity. By honoring its storied legacy, the company aims to reclaim its place among the elite of the automotive world.

Whether the new Saoutchik 300 GTC will live up to the lofty expectations set by its predecessors remains to be seen. However, the initial glimpses suggest a promising return for this iconic coachbuilder.
