Honda Cars India has officially announced its plans to introduce its first fully electric vehicle in India by 2026. This upcoming electric car will be based on the Honda Elevate platform and will feature a unique design and name. This strategic move signifies Honda’s commitment to the Indian electric vehicle market and aligns with its global electrification strategy.
Expanding Electric Vehicle Lineup
In addition to the Elevate-based EV, Honda plans to launch two more electrified vehicles between 2026 and 2027. These could include either hybrid or fully electric models, depending on market demand and regulatory requirements.
The Asian Compact Electric (ACE) project, derived from the Elevate platform, is expected to play a crucial role in Honda’s global strategy. A significant portion of its production is earmarked for export markets, including Japan.
Facing Stiff Competition
By 2026, Honda will be competing with established and emerging players in India’s electric vehicle market. Brands like Tata Motors, MG, and Mahindra have already gained significant traction, while Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota are poised to launch their mid-size electric SUVs in 2025.
To stay competitive, Honda must accelerate its electrification efforts and offer compelling electric vehicles that cater to the evolving needs of Indian consumers.
Balancing Hybrid and Electric Strategies
While Honda’s hybrid offerings, such as the City Hybrid, haven’t gained significant popularity in India, the company recognizes the importance of strong hybrids in the current market context. However, as the adoption of electric vehicles accelerates, Honda will prioritize fully electric models to comply with stricter emission regulations, such as CAFE 3 norms, which will come into effect in 2027.
The Elevate-based EV will mark Honda’s initial step towards this shift, while future hybrid models will continue to play a supporting role in the company’s diversified strategy.
