Citroen Basalt: MS Dhoni Teases Aggressive Pricing for New SUV Coupe

Citroen Basalt

Citroen is set to disrupt the Indian automotive market once again with the launch of its much-anticipated Basalt SUV coupe. Initially planned for a simultaneous launch with the Tata Curvv.EV, Citroen strategically postponed the unveiling to avoid being overshadowed by the media frenzy surrounding its competitor.

However, the French automaker has managed to create its own buzz with a teaser featuring brand ambassador MS Dhoni. The video strongly hints at an aggressively competitive pricing strategy for the Basalt, leaving even Dhoni visibly surprised.

Pricing Expectations

Industry insiders speculate that the Basalt’s starting price could be as low as Rs. 8.5 lakh, making it the most affordable SUV coupe in India. Some optimistic forecasts even suggest a price tag of Rs. 7.99 lakh, though this aggressive pricing might necessitate significant feature cuts.

While the competitive pricing is enticing, it’s essential to note that the base variant is expected to miss out on popular features like cruise control, push-button start, keyless entry, sunroof, and pull-type door handles. These omissions are likely to create opportunities for Citroen’s sales team to upsell higher-end trims.

Dimensions and Design

The Basalt sits between the C3 hatchback and the C3 AirCross in terms of size, measuring 4,352 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,651 mm. It boasts a ground clearance of 180 mm, slightly lower than the C3 AirCross due to smaller 16-inch wheels.

The SUV coupe design is a polarizing one, attracting both enthusiasts and critics. While some appreciate the unique blend of SUV stance and sedan-like silhouette, others find it aesthetically unappealing.

Powertrain Options

The Basalt will be offered with two engine options:

  • 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol: Producing 82 bhp and 115 Nm of torque, this engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Citroen is expected to leverage this engine to create a highly competitive base variant.
  • 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol: Delivering 110 bhp and 190/205 Nm of torque, this engine comes with a choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Ride and Handling

Given Citroen’s proven track record with the C3 and C3 AirCross, expectations are high for the Basalt’s ride and handling characteristics. If Citroen manages to replicate the success of its previous models, it could further solidify its position in the Indian market.

The SUV Coupe Phenomenon

Once a luxury segment exclusive, SUV coupes have become increasingly mainstream. Pioneered by BMW with the X6 in 2008, the segment has expanded significantly, with affordable options like the Basalt and Tata Curvv now entering the market.

Conclusion

The Citroen Basalt is poised to disrupt the Indian automotive landscape with its aggressive pricing and unique SUV coupe design. While the base variant might lack certain features, the overall package, combined with Citroen’s reputation for ride and handling, has the potential to attract a significant customer base. Only time will tell if the Basalt can achieve the same level of success as its predecessors.
